Two incumbents, Councilors Michael Flaherty and Julia Mejia are running for re-election, while Michelle Wu and Annissa Essaibi George are running for mayor, leaving two slots up for grabs. Mayoral Candidates

Seven candidates are running to become the next Boston mayor. State Rep. Jon Santiago dropped out on July 13. The field will narrow down to two contenders after a preliminary race on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Residents will vote for the next mayor in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 2 .

Michelle Wu

Currently Boston city councilor at-large, previously city council president

  • Has served on the city council for seven years and was the first Asian-American woman to serve on the council.
  • Top issues: housing inequality, climate change, public transportation.
  • If elected would be first woman and person of color to be Boston Mayor and the first Mayor born outside of Boston.

Annissa Essaibi George

Currently Boston city councilor at-large

  • Has served on the city council since Nov. 2015.
  • Owner of Stitch House in Dorchester and worked as a teacher for 13 years.
  • Top issues: education, homelessness, and mental health.
  • If elected would be the first woman and person of color to be Boston Mayor.

Andrea Campbell

Currently Boston city councilor representing District 4, previously city council president

  • Has served on the city council for five years.
  • Top issues: criminal justice, policing reform and racial justice.
  • Was the first Black woman to serve as the City Council president and if elected would be first woman and person of color to be Boston Mayor.

John Barros

Former Chief of Economic Development under Marty Walsh’s administration

  • Former executive director of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative and co-owner of Restaurante Cesaria in Dorchester.
  • Top issues: reopening the economy safely and equitably, creating more affordable housing, and making sure public schools work for Boston students.
  • Ran for mayor in 2013 and placed sixth out of twelve candidates.

Kim Janey

Acting mayor of Boston, previously city council president

  • Has served on the city council since 2017.
  • Top issues: tackling the housing and racial wealth gap, social justice, education and transit inequality and disparities worsened by COVID-19.
  • First woman and the first Black mayor in the city’s history and first woman to represent District 7 on the council.
